Brookfield is one of the largest owners and operators of critical and diverse global infrastructure networks which facilitate the movement and storage of energy, water, freight, passengers and data. Enercare is one of North America’s largest home and commercial services and energy solutions companies with approximately 5,000 employees under its Enercare and Service Experts brands. Enercare is a leading provider of water heaters, water treatment, furnaces, air conditioners and other HVAC rental products, plumbing services, protection plans and related services. Our History

1848

The origins of Enercare can be traced all the way back to the mid-1800’s when the Consumers’ Gas Company of Toronto was established to help light the city’s street lamps.

1900’s

Following WWII, Consumers’ Gas introduced rental hot water tanks, creating relationships with home builders to subsidize the costs of hot water tanks and eventually furnaces to stimulate the adoption of natural gas. In 1954, they began transporting natural gas from Texas and Louisiana to Ontario.

1990’s

In 1992, the Ontario Energy Board approved the deregulation of gas for residential and small businesses. Consumers could now purchase their gas from other companies besides the regulated utility. In 1996, IPL Energy acquired Consumers’ Gas, rebranding it Enbridge Consumers Gas in October 1998. In 2000, U.K. based Centrica purchased Direct Energy, later acquiring Enbridge Home Services in May 2002.

2002-2009

In July 2002, the Consumers’ Waterheater Income Fund (CWIF) was created to finance the rental water heater portfolio serviced by Direct Energy and manage business assets. The CWIF had the highest EBITDA per employee in Canada for 4 years. In November 2006, John Macdonald was hired as CWIF’s President and CEO, the first employee hired by the new external management company.

2010-2013

In October 2010, the CWIF announced plans to convert to a corporation, and change its business name and branding to EnerCare Inc. (“EnerCare”), effective January 1, 2011. On January 1, 2012, Stratacon and EnerCare Connections amalgamated under the name EnerCare Connections Inc.

2014-2015

On October 20, 2014, Enercare announced the acquisition of Direct Energy’s Ontario home and small commercial services business. On June 25, 2015, Enercare unveiled its new brand identity.

2016

On May 11, 2016, Enercare acquired Service Experts, a leading provider of HVAC repair, maintenance, new equipment sales and related services to residential and commercial customers in 29 U.S. states and 3 provinces in Canada.

TODAY

Today, Enercare is one of North America’s largest energy companies. With operations in Canada and the U.S., Enercare serves approximately 1.9 M customers annually under its Enercare and Service Experts brands. Enercare is also the largest non-utility sub-meter provider, with electricity, water, thermal and gas metering contracts for condo and apartment suites in Canada and through its Triacta brand, a premier designer and manufacturer of advanced sub-meters and sub-metering solutions.
